Hard Tack, Ice Cream, and a Darn' Tootin Dream
Hard Tack, Ice Cream, and a Darn Tootin' Dream was created over the course of a semester by a 2-person team. We ideated and designed the game together in preproduction, and then moved into development. I was responsible for the game's programming, systems design, and any in-engine integration in general.
The entire project was a continous challenge for me in terms of system design and integration. As the sole programmer, I had many instances where I had to stop what I was doing completely and reconsider the problem as a whole, even if it meant losing progress in the moment. There were many systems doing completely different things - UI physics, audio, inventory interaction, score calculation - and altering my approach to one often meant updating quite a bit of my work on the systems it was connected to.
I greatly enjoyed my time working on this game, and I think it's probably the most I've ever learned and grown from a project. I think the most important skill I honed in particular was being able to look at systems architecture from a greater standpoint, considering each different system and its interaction rather than completing one in isolation and trying to connect it afterwards.
